A viral deubiquitylating enzyme stabilizes viral RNA- dependent RNA polymerase and affects viral infectivity

Thank you for submitting your manuscript on the identification of DUB function in the TYMV protease for consideration by The EMBO Journal. Three referees have now provided their comments, which are copied below. As you will see, the referees appreciate that your study (for the most part convincingly) establishes TYMV 98K as a bona fide new example of a viral DUB enzyme, although a few open questions regarding its characterization and classification remain. At the same time, however, all reviewers feel that the potential novelty and conceptual advance that could make this study interesting also to a wider audience really hinges on the functional evidence, in the second part of the manuscript, for a specific role in 66K RdRP deubiquitination and stabilization and hence viral replication; and here all referees currently feel that deeper and more definitive analyses would be required to strongly support these conclusions.
